My favourite pick me up drink

My favourite pick me up drink

One of the greatest challenge when you are trying to follow a diet or an healthy eating regime is dealing with sweet cravings. Whether your body is asking for a bit of comfort, some extra energy or simply responding to a stress induced craving, it is important to take notice and try to respond to that signal in an intelligent way.

NO DEPRIVATION

I am not someone who believes in deprivation. It’s human, the more you deny yourself something and the more you want it. So if I crave a treat, first I think about what could be the reasons for that and I ask myself some questions ( am I stressed, have I slept restfully enough, am I anxious, have I eaten enough ) and then if I still feel that urge, I try to limit the damage a give myself the least sugary treat that can still satisfy my craving.

LIMIT SUGAR

My first choice is always to go for my favourite pick me up chocolate drink, that is low in sugar, and rich in micro-nutrients and anti-oxidants. No dairy, no nuts, no gluten & no added sugar.

BETTER THAN COFFEE

This  raw cocoa & cinnamon drink is chocolatey delicious, it helps re-hydrate you ( sometimes a “sweet craving” can be a sign of de-hydration ) and usually gives me that “energy kick” that I normally find in coffee, but without the usually side effect of it. Coffee usually gives me energy when I drink it, but then saps my energy away, and makes me more tired than ever.

RICH IN MAGNESIUM

Cocoa is also rich in magnesium, that is a mineral important for so many functions in the body, from energy production to bone health and carbohydrates metabolism. Magnesium can also help for some types of migraines and PMS syndrome.

THE RECIPE

Ingredients for 1

  • 1 tbsp of raw cocoa powder
  • A dash of cinnamon
  • Few drops of organic maple syrup (optional)
  • Hot water

Method

Simply place the ingredients in a mug, cover with hot water from the kettle, and stir well.

This a base version, but it is perfect for your everyday chocolate cravings, and does not require any fresh ingredients, and it  can be made with items that you can easily store in your kitchen cupboard. In the next few weeks I will share more of my favourite healthy sweet treats and tips & trick to be healthy on the go.
