How to stay cool during a heatwave

How to stay cool during a heatwave

Whether in London or on holiday right now, you are likely to be sweltering hot! With a heatwave that is affecting all over Europe and UK, it is important to take good care to avoid heatstrokes and dehydration, so here are my health coach tips to stay cool during hot weather.

  1. Make sure that you stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day to minimize the risk of heatstroke.
  2. Wear loose-fitting clothing made in natural fabric like linen, silk, or light cotton, and avoid synthetic materials and tight-fitting clothing. Chose something that let your skin breathe.
  3. Reduce alcohol. Alcohol reduces the body’s tolerance to heat and speeds up dehydration.
  4. Stay hydrated. When we sweat a lot, it is important to replace not only water but also electrolytes, like potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium.
  5. Invest in a fan, to cool off and reduce the risk of heatstroke.
  6. Chose your exercise wisely and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  7. Choose cooling foods, with plenty of natural electrolytes, like watermelon, cucumber, and tomatoes that are rich in water and electrolytes.
  8. Go for lighter and digestible foods that require little or no cooking like salads, especially during the day. Swap your red meats for fish, seafood, eggs, or lean meats like chicken.
  9. You may not feel hungry, especially during the day, so you may want to go for smaller meals or healthy snacks, sipping on homemade smoothies, and diluted homemade juices or homemade iced tea.
